In the absence of a monitor for adequacy of anti-nociception (analgesia), delivery of opiates is not optimized. CARDEAN™ allows optimized administration of opiates, improving hemodynamic stability and shortening the recovery from anesthesia (see "Publications" menu).
The CARDEAN™ index is based on the beat-by-beat interaction between blood pressure and heart rate. The CARDEAN™ index is calculated for each spontaneous infra-clinical rise in blood pressure and assesses adequacy of anti-nociception from heart rate response to blood pressure rise, by discriminating normal baroreflex functioning from a non-baroreflex pressure regulation.
The last version of the CARDEAN™ is 4.0. This quasi-continuous version (1 new value each 5 seconds) uses electrocardiogram and raw curve of pulse oxymetry (plethysmography) measured by a standard patient monitor. The last studies were performed using a Philips IntelliVue patient monitor.
